Giving Tree

I ran across a giving tree. You know: kids write on a card what they would like for Christmas. The card is put on a tree. You pick up the card, get the gift, and return it. Eventually the gift makes it's way to the child.

Well, I was looking at the tree and this card jumped out: Girl, age 7.... wants a "My First Science Kit.

Not a Barbie, not a Bratz, and not a Ms Mollie Makeup Kit. She wants a science kit! She wants to be a scientist! I grabbed the card. I felt I had to do something for her.

M and I went out the store and bought the science kit. I also purchased a children's book on science and wrapped it up with the science kit.

Having to resort to the giving tree means this girl has an uphill fight for most things in life. Becoming a scientist will be hard work. He family can't afford her the gift. So she fills out a card, and hopes for the best.

Maybe this will give her some hope.

When my son was small, we allocated one night during the holiday season to shop for someone else, for the giving tree. We made a big deal out of remembering someone else, and denying ourselves everything--we weren't even allowed to buy ourselves a soda while we were out.
